Keymer pulls even with Navara

Vincent Keymer won the duel of the pursuers in the Biel Grandmaster Tournament on International Chess Day against Lê Quang Liêm, so that he now leads the table with equal points with Navara. As yesterday, Navara had to settle for a draw, today against the Frenchman Moussard. Bassem Amin made a leap forward: The six-time African champion did not give Erigaisi a chance and is now in fifth place, within sight of the top of the table.

By far the longest battle of the day was between Yu Yangyi and Bogdan-Daniel Deac: after 6 hours and 59 minutes they agreed on a draw. Yu thus moves up to third place and is less than one win, four points, behind the leading duo. In the lead with 17 points each are David Navara and Vincent Keymer. Navara is considered to be first in the standings because in the event of a tie, the result of the ACCENTUS Chess960 competition comes into play as a tie-breaker, in which Navara scored half a point better than Keymer. Besides Keymer, Bassem Amin can also feel like the winner of the day after his victory over Arjun Erigaisi. The Egyptian feels extremely comfortable in Biel: As he explained in an interview after the match, the Biel Festival, in which he already took part for the first time 22 years ago, is his absolute favourite tournament!

Liu Yan sole leader in the Master Tournament

Chinese Grandmaster Liu Yan remains the only one unblemished in the Master Tournament MTO after defeating the previous leader GM Aryan Chopra (IND) on board 1 today. With 4 points, he is now half a point ahead of four players at the top of the rankings. Among his closest pursuers are the tournament's No. 1 GM Bu Xiangzhi, today victorious against Irine Sukandar, who delivered an eight-hour game on Wednesday night; and Indian GM Pranav Anand. The best woman is currently the Indian WGM Vantika Agrawal in 18th place with 3/4 points, the best Swiss is Fabian Frey in 42nd place.

Main Tournament and Amateur Torunament

The Main Tournament HTO is taking shape: Michal Mirski (POL) and Alexey Khanabiev (BLR) have pulled away at the top and now lead by a whole point. Michal Mirski has beaten the number 1 of the tournament, Prokopios Mamalis (GRE), who has dropped back to rank 11.

In the Amateur Tournament ATO, two players remain who have not yet given up any points: The two Swiss players Athanasios Zafeiridis and Dmitrii Titov, who will meet tomorrow.

Outlook: Last against first

On Friday, the last team in the table, Deac, will face the leader Navara. Will the advantage of playing with white help Deac? After Lê on Thursday, Keymer will meet Yu, the other top East Asian player, on Friday – again he will be allowed to play with white. Lê will play against Erigaisi and Moussard against Amin.
