A day for Navara

David Navara confirmed the good impression he is making at the Biel Chess Festival and consolidated his lead with a win today. He defeated Amin in the first round of classical games to leave Keymer behind, who had to settle for a draw against Moussard in the duel of the Western Europeans. By far the toughest battle over almost seven hours – unsurprisingly given their ratings as No. 1 and No. 3 in the tournament – was between Yu and Erigaisi.

In the duel between the Asian chess superpowers China and India, the Chinese representative Yu Yangi was initially able to use the benefit of the white pieces and gain an advantage. But Erigaisi showed perseverance and, thanks to mistakes by Yu, was ultimately able to bring the game back into balance, so that the opponents finally agreed on a draw. In the fourth game of the day, last year's winner Lê defeated the Romanian Deac, who thus remains at the bottom of the table.

Some favourites of the open tournaments stumble

In the open tournaments the second round was played today. In the Master Tournament MTO it shows that this will be anything but a walk in the park for the top seeded players: Two of the four players with over 2600 Elo drew - both despite the advantage of the white pieces! The Vietnamese Nguyen was not able to win against the Chinese Huang Qian, and Daniil Yuffa was not able to win against Jomon Jinan from India - in both games the difference in rating was around 200 Elo!

In the main HTO tournament, Greece's number 1 seed Prokopios Mamalis had a lapse and only drew against Germany's Rainer Hansel. He is now behind seven other players who have not yet lost any points.

A novelty: The Beauty Awards

When many dozens of games are played every day, there are always some particularly outstanding ones among them. To highlight these, the organisers of the Biel Chess Festival have created the "Beauty Award": Every evening after the games, the most attractive game from the MTO, HTO and ATO can be voted for on the festival's social media channels. The winners have the opportunity to present their game in the live stream the following day and receive a small gift.

The winners are showcased on our website: https://www.bielchessfestival.ch/Tournaments/Open-Tournaments/ISF-Beauty-Awards.html

Outlook: Lasts against firsts

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the two last-placed in the table of the GMT will meet the two first-placed: Both last-placed Deac (against Keymer) and second-last-placed Erigaisi (against Navara) have still left a lot to be desired. Can they find their way back into the tournament tomorrow, playing with the advantage of white?

The three big open tournaments are entering their third round.
