The Swiss Chess Youth Championship finals start in Biel

While the Grandmasters enjoyed a rest day today, the main tournament went into its sixth round. Today also saw the start of the four-day final tournament of the Swiss Youth Championships, in which the 72 most promising talents of the country will compete in four age categories.

This year, the final tournament of the Swiss Youth Championship will also take place as part of the Biel International Chess Festival, as the orginal finals had to be postponed due to the pandemic. In the next four days the 18 best young players in the country will compete in the categories U16, U14, U12 and U10 each. This tournament is also subject to protective measures due to the pandemic. Even though the championship will take place in the same building as the other tournaments, the premises will be strictly separated from each other. The playing hall may only be accessed by the players, everone else can follow the games here: http://www.swisschess.ch/alle-live.html

Christian Bauer defends lead in main tournament

The Corona main tournament went into the sixth of nine rounds today and the ranking is slowly taking shape. Leader and favourite GM Christian Bauer (FRA) left half a point for the first time today, after a draw against IM Gerlef Meins (GER), but was able to retain his position. Half a point behind Bauer there is a sextet lurking, consisting of today's opponent IM Gerlef Meins, and GM Bilel Bellahcene (ALG), IM Adrian Gschnitzer (GER), FM Bruno Kamber (SUI), FM Frank Buchenau (GER) and Phileas Mathieu (FRA).

Outlook: grandmaster tournament

After the hectic of yesterday’s Blitz tournament, the Grandmasters enjoyed their second rest day today. After a lunch together, the players enjoyed a round of miniature golf. Tomorrow they will continue with the fifth round of the classical games. In the top match, the two Elo strongest players of the tournament will meet: Wojtaszek vs. Harikrishna. If the Indian, who is third, seven points behind the Pole, wants to keep a chance to win the tournament, he has to play for victory – with the black pieces! Also Wojtaszek's first pursuer has to play with Black on Monday: Mickey Adams will challenge David Antón Guijarro, who, after a weak start into the tournament, played the third best Blitz tournament.
