Start of the classic games of the Grand Master Tournament with four crucial games.

At the 52nd International Chess Festival of Biel/Bienne the Grand Master tournament and the two open tournaments started. With a total of 310 players, the large tournament hall in the Kongresshaus in Biel is filled. Despite the hot days, all players were able to show intense playing.

With the beginning of the classic games, the eight players of the Grand Master tournament showed active chess with decisions in all games. The better ranked players were able to prevail in all games. The two representatives of Switzerland lost both their games in the 1st time control area. Sebastian Bogner was under constant pressure with the black pieces against the winner of the rapid tournament Peter Leko from Hungary. Despite stubborn defense Peter Leko could win a piece after the last move after the time control with a temporary queen's sacrifice with a trigger chess and force the immediate surrender. The former Vice World Champion Peter Leko can defend his lead in the overall ranking.
In the match between Nico Georgiadis and Sam Shankland from the United States, Sam Shankland played a figure against three pawns in the middlegame. Nico Georgiadis' piece advantage could not intervene later in the match. The game could have ended in a draw if the game had been played precisely. Under constant pressure, Sam Shankland was able to set a trap before the time control, which was enough to win the game.
In the other two games, Parham Maghsoodloo (Iran) beat Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzbekistan). This was the duel between the two youngest players. Santosh Vidit (India) beat Jorge Cori (Peru).

In the open Master tournament, 132 players compete. The players come from 33 countries and a total of 59 champions - 34 of them grandmasters - are represented. In the first round, there were no bluffs between the better ranked players, which resulted in victories.

170 players with 14 different nations are taking part in the Main Tournament.
