There were was no movement in the Masters Triathlon today. The tournament’s top match between the two top seeds, Lê Quang Liêm and Levon Aronian, ended in a draw – as did the game between Erdogmus and Süleymanli. The Generations Challenge between Finek and Materia also ended in a draw, meaning Finek has taken another step towards winning the tournament.
In the Masters Open tournament, Christian Glöckler has secured his third consecutive victory, thereby extending his lead at the top of the table by a full point. The fourteen-year-old is in impressive form and stands out for his patient and precise play.
Masters Triathlon: Two draws
Levon Aronian’s rivals failed to close the gap in the Masters Triathlon at the Biel Chess Festival. The top-of-the-table clash between three-time Biel winner Lê Quang Liêm and Aronian ended in a draw. Lê, currently in fourth place and trailing leader Aronian by 5½ points, could have reignited his title hopes with a win. However, he could not find a way to put Aronian under pressure. With the resulting draw, it will now be very difficult for the Vietnamese player to secure another victory in Biel.
In the other game, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Aydin Süleymanli were locked in a fierce battle. Their game was also very evenly matched, but for over five hours they searched in vain for a way to win. Four extra points on the board would have meant that both players could once again be serious contenders for the tournament title. Even with the resulting draw, this remains a possibility for both, though only if everything goes perfectly in the two remaining rounds.
On Wednesday at 2 pm, the matches between Süleymanli and Lê, and Erdogmus and Aronian, will take place at the Biel Congress Centre. To keep their chances of winning the tournament alive, both Erdogmus and the two players in the other game must play for a win. Aronian, on the other hand, can adopt a defensive approach and try to secure another draw.

Generations Challenge: Finek on pole position
The Generations Challenge is drawing to a close and Vaclav Finek is in an excellent position to win the tournament. Even before today’s game against Marco Materia, Finek had a 3-point lead over his nearest rival, Xiao Tong – that lead has now increased to 4½ points. The game between Finek and Materia was evenly matched, offered neither player any clear chances, and so ended in a draw after 36 moves due to repetition of moves – earning both players an additional 1½ points. For Materia, this means that winning the tournament is no longer a possibility; for Xiao Tong, it means he must defeat Finek in the final match on Thursday and also secure points against Materia tomorrow. If he fails to do so, Finek will win the 2026 Biel Generations Challenge.

Glöckler dominates the Masters Open
Still unbeaten after eight rounds, with just two draws and three consecutive wins to his name, IM Christian Glöckler leads the Masters Open tournament – by a clear margin. With today’s victory over IM Cao Qingfeng, he has extended his lead to one point, as his closest rivals all drew their games. A total of six players are tied on 6 points behind Glöckler, including GM Dimitris Alexakis, whom the 14-year-old German will face tomorrow. The Kazakh WGM Xeniya Balabayeva, the highest-ranked woman in the tournament, is currently in twelfth place; the top Swiss players, with a score of 5 points, are currently IM Fabian Bänziger, WGM Lena Georgescu and FM Cristian Marc Arsenie.

ATO: Alexakis beats Jahn to take the lead
In the seventh round of the Amateur Tournament ATO, Thomas Jahn suffered his first defeat at the hands of Dimitrios Alexakis, who has now overtaken Jahn by half a point and taken the lead in the tournament with 6½ points. Jahn remains his closest challenger, alongside the nine-year-old WCM Abigail Zhou! The young American has demonstrated her great talent in Biel and, should she return to the watchmaking capital in future, this is likely to have been her last appearance in the Amateur’s tournament. In fourth to sixth place, with 5½ points each, are three players from Switzerland: Marc Jud, Timon Tubini and WCM Ena Bangerter.

Round 2 of Total Chess
At the Biel Hospital Centre Total Chess tournament, four players have so far remained undefeated: Anuar Tureshbayev, GM Alexander Cherniaev, IM Illijin Neboisa and Jérémie Papaux. They have therefore managed to win their classical, rapid and blitz games in each of the two rounds played so far.
