Success for the Swiss at the Grand Master Tournament

The two Swiss grandmasters were able to achieve their first successes in the second round of the classic games. Sebastian Bogner outplayed his Iranian opponent Parham Maghsoodloo on the queenside and won a pawn with a small tactical trick. As a result, Sebastian Bogner made good use of his material advantage and was able to record his first great success at this year's Grand Master's Tournament with a matt attack.

Nico Georgiadis was able to play against Peter Leko (Hungary) from a difficult position in the middlegame to an endgame with one rook and one knight each. Nico Georgiadis then gave up his knight against the last two white pawn and was able to hold the theoretical draw final (but with practical chances) rook and jump against rook.

In the remaining two games a draw was agreed shortly after the 40th move. After entertaining games, the two players with the black pieces were able to play balanced bishop-finals. In the game between number 1 and 2 of the seed list Sam Shankland from the United States and Santosh Vidit from India black could neutralize the initiative of white with a pawn sacrifice in the middlegame and despite extra pawns the final was no longer to be won with unequal coloured bishops. Jorge Cori (Peru) and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzbekistan) reached a bishop's final with a fortress character shortly after the first time control, which did not allow any further winning attempts.

In the overall ranking Peter Leko (Hungary) is still leading by one point. Nico Georgiadis is sixth and Sebastian Bogner seventh. In the second lap of the MTO, the first title holders met each other. There were only a few surprises on the first boards. On the fourth board the Indian grandmaster Dronavalli Harika was able to draw her opponent, grandmaster Saleh Salem (UAE), who was 180 Elopoints higher.
