Nearly missed sensation by GM Nico Georgiadis

There is a merger at the top of the Grand Master Tournament and nobody in the Master Open has the maximum points.

The American Grandmaster Sam Shankland was able to recover from his defeat in the previous round and got a relatively easy victory. His Iranian opponent Parham Maghsoodloo already came under pressure in the opening match. In the 17th move, Shankland won two pawns with a temporary piece sacrifice and a subsequent knight fork. After a few more moves, the game was already over. Shankland needed only 31 minutes for the 26 moves! This is extremely fast when you consider that each move takes about three minutes on average.

The Swiss Grandmaster Nico Georgiadis was able to put great pressure on the Indian Grandmaster Santosh Vidit with white in the Grünfelder opening with two centre pawns and the pair of bishops. The 27th turn offered the opportunity to help the pawn on b7 to make his breakthrough with a temporary piece sacrifice. After Georgiadis left out this possibility, the white pawn on b7 was still in danger, but could be controlled by black because of the unevenly coloured bishop. The further winning attempts were not succesful and in the 66th turn there was a draw. In the "chess-generation game" of the 14-year-old Uzbek GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov and the almost three times older Hungarian GM Peter Leko there also was a draw. The same result resulted in the game between GM Sebastian Bogner (Switzerland) and GM Cori Jorge (Peru).

After the 4th round of the classical reflection period GM Vidit and GM Shankland are leading together. The two Swiss Georgiadis and Bogner are on the last two places. However, they are in close contact with the players from the midfield.

On Friday, July 26th, the participants of the Grandmaster Tournament will have their rest day to start the Blitz Tournament on Saturday, July 27th with freshly recharged batteries.

In the Master Open there are no more players with the point maximum and it comes to a union at the top of the ranking: 9 players with 3.5 points from 4 games are now in the lead.
