Biel Chess Festival: blitz event doesn't shake up the ranking too much

Great comeback by Gata Kamsky: Last year's winner in Biel, ranked last before today, showed with his victory in today's blitz tournament that he should not be written off yet. He prevailed in an extremely balanced tournament, seven of the eight players were ranked within 1.5 points. In the blitz event of the ladies’ quadriathlon, Iris Ciarletta, born in 2009 and thus the youngest player, showed an outstanding performance with 12 out of 14 possible points. Even more impressive was the day of GM Haik M. Martirosyan, who won today's one-day blitz tournament in Biel with a fabulous 12½ points out of a possible 13!

The Grandmaster Triathlon GMT blitz tournament marked the return of legend Gata Kamsky: After finishing last in the rapid event, the American took first place in blitz with 8.5 of 14 possible points. Salem, Keymer, and Abdusattorov also had a great tournament, sharing second place with 8/14. The leader, Gukesh, finished with 7.5/14, overall a good result as he maintained a two point lead in the tournament. The Indian remains in the lead with 24 points, still ahead of Lê Quang (22) and Esipenko (21.5). The three players are followed by Salem (20.5). That said, nothing is decided yet in this tournament, there are still 16 possible points that each player can win.

DAQ: Iris Ciarletta dominates the blitz tournament!

Iris Ciarletta dominated the blitz event of the ladies' quadriathlon with a stunning 12 of 14 possible points, ahead of Moracchini (9/14) and Sumarriva (8/14). The leader, Zhuang Yongzhe, scored only 6.5 points and overall-second, Juliette Cornileau, only 5.5 points. The gap at the top of the tournament thus is closing: Zhuang keeps the lead with 29.5 points, followed by Ciarletta at 28 and finally Cornileau who is up to 26.5 points. In this tournament too, nothing is decided, but one will have to beat the leader to have a chance to overtake her!

Open Blitz Tournament: Martirosyan with an almost perfect day!

While the MTO and ATO had a rest day, a one day open blitz tournament with 106 participants took place in Biel. While a whole group of Indians, just like in the MTO, were present around the first tables, they could do nothing against the incredible performance of Haik M. Martirosyan (favourite of the tournament with 2706 Elo blitz) who won the tournament with an amazing 12.5/13! As far as we now, an unprecendented resulat at a Biel blitz tournament! The podium is completed by two Indian players, both Grandmasters, but very underrated in fast pace: GM Raja Harshit (2338!) and GM Bharath Subramaniyam (2242!) who achieve 10/13 and 9,5/13. They left behind a pleiad of players much better ranked, including some with more than 2600 Elo!
