Beginnings and Training

Born in Russia, Fedoseev discovered chess at a very young age and quickly distinguished himself with his exceptional talent. At just 16, he earned the Grandmaster (GM) title, showcasing his precocity and remarkable potential. His passion for the game, combined with an aggressive playing style and rapid analytical skills, allowed him to shine on the international stage as a teenager.

Career and Achievements

Fedoseev has amassed numerous successes over the years:

  • 2011: Silver medal at the World Youth Chess Championship (U18) and gold medal with the Russian team at the Youth Chess Olympiad (U16) in Kocaeli, Turkey. He became a GM the same year.
  • 2012: Second place at the Governor’s Cup in Ugra.
  • 2013: Victory in the U18 category at the European Youth Chess Championship (classical, rapid, and blitz) in Budva, Montenegro.
  • 2014: Bronze medal at the World Junior Chess Championship and the European Individual Championship, qualifying him for the 2015 Chess World Cup.
  • 2015: Bronze medal with the Saint Petersburg team at the European Chess Club Cup. He also won the Vladimir Dvorkovich Memorial in Taganrog and placed third at the “Lake Sevan” tournament in Armenia.
  • 2017: Victory at the prestigious Aeroflot Open, earning him a spot in the Dortmund tournament, where he defeated Vladimir Kramnik and finished second. He reached the quarterfinals of the Chess World Cup in Tbilisi, eliminating players like Hikaru Nakamura before being stopped by Wesley So. He also won a silver medal at the World Rapid Chess Championship in Riyadh (losing a tiebreak to Viswanathan Anand) and an individual gold medal as a reserve board player at the World Team Chess Championship with Russia.
  • 2023: Another silver medal at the World Rapid Chess Championship in Samarkand.
  • 2024: Now representing Slovenia, he led the Slovenian team to 9th place at the Chess Olympiad. He achieved a historic double victory at the European Rapid and Chess960 Championships in Skopje, dominating the Chess960 event with 10½/11 points. He also defeated Magnus Carlsen at the Chess Olympiad.
  • 2025: Victory in the qualifying tournament for the first leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in January 2025. He also dominated the Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz tournament.

Federation Change

In 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Fedoseev chose to no longer represent Russia. He played temporarily under the FIDE flag and briefly settled in Valencia, Spain. In July 2023, he officially switched to the Slovenian Chess Federation, becoming the country’s top player.

Fedoseev is renowned for his aggressive playing style and ability to quickly analyze complex positions. Off the board, he is described as humble and reserved, consistently focused on improving his skills.
