Open tournaments for all levels
As for open tournaments, the organisers once again offer a wide range of options: from major Masters Open Tournaments (MTO) and Amateur Open Tournament (ATO) – comprising 10 and 9 rounds of classical chess respectively – to various one-day tournaments. A new feature this year is that, during the second week (20–24 July), the Biel Hospital Centre Total Chess (TRI) will take place in the mornings. Like the invitational tournaments, this will be organised as a ‘triathlon’: with one game of blitz chess, one of rapid chess and then, to round off the morning, a game of fast standard chess – meaning that amateurs can now take part in a triathlon too! The Freestyle Chess (960) tournament, played in the Chess960 variant, will take place in the mornings during the very first week. The programme is rounded off by the traditional one-day tournaments in blitz and rapid chess, as well as the Swiss Championship in Rapid Fischer Chess (Chess960).
